Christian Education, Nurture and Topical Studies

August 2008

Sunday 9:25 A.M.

Yahweh / Ego Eimi / I Am

August 10 - The Eternal Christ - John 8:31-59

Jesus' interaction with the Jews' religious leaders produces Hi definitive "I AM" statement. An emphatic form of "I AM" was used throughout the Old Testament in Greek for the name Yahweh, the name by which the Jews' covenant Lord has revealed himself. Here Jesus clearly identified himself with that Name as the eternal Christ. He is the covenant Lord who came to fulfill the covenant. The Jews got the point.

August 17 - The Way, The Truth, The Life - John 14:1-14

Jesus bids us trust in God and in Him for eternal life, and gives us good reason to do so with his "I AM" Way, Truth, and Life. He tells His disciples and us that the way to see the Father is to look at him, our Lord and Savior.

August 24 - The Gate for the Sheep - John 10:1-10

The first picture in the Good Shepherd chapter is that of the gate to the sheepfold.  Jesus contrasts shepherds and thieves in terms of their approach to the sheep.  Finally he points to himself with his emphatic "I AM" as the only gate through whom the sheep may go in and out and find life.

August 31 - The Light of the World - John 8:12 and 9:1-41

The healing of a man born blind provides Jesus with the opportunity to demonstrate that he is indeed the Light of the World.  He again uses the emphatic "I Am" that identifies him as Yahweh in action.  As is the case in the Kingdom of God, a blind man sees and believes while those who claim to see clearly are blind to the truth.

COMING IN SEPTEMBER        Get Ready to Encounter the Jesus You Never Knew!

You are invited to a journey that will challenge you-and change you.  It will be a journey that will expand-and very likely redefine-your understanding the person, teachings, and life of Jesus Christ.  Pressing beyond familiar images you will discover Jesus as you've never known him: radical, compelling, compassionate, bold, incisive, and ultimately satisfying.  Clips of various movies will be used to share what some people have experienced about Jesus.

The fourteen week sessions are based upon Phillip Yancey's The Jesus I Never Knew.  This book and What's So Amazing About Grace each were Christian Books of the Year. He is also author of eleven Gold Medallion Award-winning books.  He has also been editor-in-chief of "Christianity Today."

Starting Sunday September 7 come discover "again for the first time" a refreshing, unpredictable, and exciting person whom you may have never known before.  Sessions facilitated by Roger Berg.  Please sign-up in the church entry in August so we will have some idea for materials needed.
